Bad Back Help

In our seated tai chi programme we teach a lovely seated nei gong exercise. It is an exercise that reinforces correct posture and breathing and also serves a method for calming the body and mind. It can also be incorporated into a pre-sleep ritual for those who suffer from insomnia – it help’s prepare the body for a peaceful night’s sleep. It can also be used at your desk and in your car.
Simple Seated Nei Gong
1 – Firstly you will need to be seated – either sitting on a chair or on the edge of the bed. Ideally you should sit at a height were your thighs are horizontal with your feet sitting flat on the floor shoulder width apart.
2 – Now you need to hold your head “as if suspended from above”. Imagine that you have a book balanced on your head and then gently float the crown of the upward – ensuring that crown stays level and your book doesn’t fall off! This should cause you to sit up straight and feel the spine open.
3 – Keeping your feet on the floor and your head suspended gently pull your tailbone towards your belly button. This will create an opening in the lower back.
4 – Once you have your body in the right position we can now start to co-ordinate your breath and body. You need to take a gentle breath in and as you exhale gently sigh the breath out and relax the body. We do this in a number of stages that takes the mind and breath all the way through the body:
(a) First take your mind to the muscles of the neck, breath in and then gentle sigh the breath out and soften them.
(b) Take your mind to your lungs, breath in, exhale and soften.
(c) Take your mind to the heart and diaphragm, breath in, exhale and soften.
(d) Take your mind to the psoas muscle (or the belly and lower back if this is easier to visualise) breath in, exhale and soften.
(e) Take the mind to the pelvic floor, breath in, exhale and soften.
(f) Take your mind to the backs of the knees, breath in, exhale and soften.
(g) Take your mind to the arches of the feet, breath in, exhale and soften.
(h) Finally take a slow deep gentle breath in, exhale and soften all the way through the body starting at the neck and finishing at the arches of the feet.
TIP
Sometimes you will come to a part of the body that just doesn’t want to soften and release. Don’t worry about this as it will create more tension. Simply and dispassionately take another breath in and repeat as many times this body part needs to soften. Also sometimes gently holding the breath and letting it ‘percolate’ in that body part before gently sighing out can also work wonders.

Against Bullying

Your child may be the victim of bullying and you might not even know that.
Bullies Should Not Be Tolerated – Ever!
Many children are asking them selves how to deal with bullies who make their life harder. Whether it is in school or among any other groups, bullies are everywhere and many of our children are being bullied – may be right in this moment.
Lots of people have some experience with bullies. Being a target of someone’s abuse or anger issues of paradoxically weaker ones who wants to boost their ego on those more vulnerable.
Bullied children and even adults can have big emotional a psychical problems so it is best to learn or teach the bullied ones how to deal with bullies.
1. Tell them that bullying is not tolerated and that by telling you they do nothing wrong. Your children should not be afraid to tell you that they are victims of bullies. If they don’t want to tell you, they should tell someone else they trust and who will tell you or help give them needed support. Tell them that it is not only their problem but it concerns all of the children and people around. Tell them if they are bullied, it is not a bad thing to say that and if they turn in the bullies they actually do good thing no matter what others think.
2. Sign them to a martial arts school so they will get some confidence and they will also loose the fear of being bullied physically. Sometimes when your bullied child starts to attend martial arts classes, the bullies give up on bullying him/her since martial artist have some kind of respect among children.
3. Teach your children not to react impulsively against bullies. The reaction is what bullies expect from bullied children. If your child would learn not to react for example no abuse from other children and to ignore it – soon the bullies will stop because, said literally, it is no fun. If attacked physically, teach them to fight back though. This is important because when the bully sees he can even beat your child, he will do it frequently. Fighting back bullies is the best way out of it.
4. Teach your children to defend others if they see some other kids are being bullied. This way they will become some kind of protector and the bullies will see they have a competition. This can even stop bullies from their actions. What is also important, you must teach your kids that bullying is really bad thing and so if they have the power to fight bullies and to even protect others from being bullied – how not to become bullies themselves. Children don’t think of it that way, they just want to pay back for all they had to suffer. Teach them that hurting others is bad and that they only should defend and protect – never attack!
Be a good parent and build a bridge of trust and friendship with your kids. This way it would be easier even for them to tell you they have some problems in school or elsewhere. Being bullied is no fun and bullies are a big problem.
Remember though – they are just kids – don’t give them guns to deal with that if you know what I mean.
Have an experience with bullies? Don’t be afraid to share…
